Saw Mill River Road reopened on Monday after a large boulder caused a building to partially collapse in Yonkers.
The collapse happened around 7:30 a.m., when fire officials said, "a little bit of a mudslide," from all of the rain the area has experienced, caused a building at 1256 Saw Mill River Road to partially collapse.
"It looks like there's a pretty big boulder in the back that slipped off the front of the face and into the exterior portion which caused the collapse," said Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Chris Canfield.
People on scene said the building is home to a company called Peterson Tool Rental, a family-owned business, that has been in operation since 1953.
Fire officials said the company's employees were the ones who discovered the damage from the collapse Monday morning when they were arriving for work.
No one was hurt from the incident, but fire crews said fuel from a 500-gallon heating oil tank that was inside the building spilled onto the road.
"Along with some waste oil from all the other machinery," Canfield added.
Firefighters said they put absorbent booms and spread sand on the road to try and soak that fuel up. Their crews were accompanied on scene by workers from Yonkers Department of Public Works, the Building Department, police officers and the family who owns the tool company.
While the family declined to speak on camera, Bridget Clarke, a fellow business owner nearby, said she is friendly with them and added that she is happy that no one got hurt in the incident.
"That's the good news of the day. They're great people. We love them, so thank God they're doing OK, from what I can see," Clarke said.
City officials said the family has hired a private company to clean everything up.
Fire crews say a demolition is also required at the site, but the family said they're still trying to figure out when that might happen.
