East Brunswick High School was put on lockdown and then a shelter-in-place Wednesday morning after several fights broke out inside the school.

Officials were afraid the fights would spread, so the lockdown was put in place as a safety precaution. The shelter-in-place was in effect so that the school could continue operating without students moving around the building.

School officials say the original incident stemmed from a dispute between two students. Officials said “student agitators” expanded the fight to other parts of the building.

“East Brunswick Public Schools has a zero tolerance for any disruptive behavior. The safety of our students, staff and community members remains our top priority,” officials wrote in a statement.

No injuries were reported and no weapons were used.

The students were released from school at the normal dismissal time.
