Police are searching for a man who was released from Rikers Island due to a clerical error Wednesday.
According to the Department of Correction, 26-year-old Christopher Buggs was “prematurely released” from the jail
complex, and now police want him back in custody.
Police say Buggs was behind bars for fatally shooting a 55-year-old man in
front of a bodega in Bed-Stuy in 2018.
Buggs was being held at Rikers Island for second-degree murder and criminal
possession charges while awaiting trial.
The NYPD says he has 31 prior arrests.
He is described as approximately 5’5’’ and around 160 pounds.
The Department of Correction released a
statement, saying in part: “We are aware of this incident and a full
investigation into how this happened is underway. Right now, we are working
with our law enforcement partners to return this individual to custody.”
Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
