The week leading up to Christmas Day is the busiest time of the year for the United States Postal Service, and they gear up several months in preparation for the spike in mail deliveries.
Today is the last day for Priority Mail service at post offices around New York City for customers needing to get their gifts at the doors of loved ones before Christmas.
To deal with the increase in holiday delivery, the Postal Service says it hired 20,000 employees for the peak season. It also says it converted approximately 100,000 workers to full-time status since the beginning of 2021.
The Postal Service says it's installed 249 sorting machines at various processing locations, an effort to cut delivery time down to just 2 1/2days.
For those who couldn't make it to their post office for the Priority Mail deadline, the USPS says customers have until Friday to mail packages by Priority Express to get items delivered just in time for Christmas.
