A neglected puppy found roaming the halls of a Bronx apartment building is now on the mend, thanks to New York City Second Chance Rescue.
It's all thanks to a call from a Bronx foster that alerted the organization of a sick puppy that needed care.
President and founder Jennifer Brooks says when they saw the puppy, it left them in shambles.
"We're thinking, 'OK, maybe it's a puppy has parvo or something wrong with it,' and when she went and got the puppy, she couldn't believe the condition of the puppy. The puppy was purely, purely neglected and not fed. Pretty close to starvation," said Brooks.
Now, her name is Gina.
Brooks tells News 12 it's a special tribute and holds sentimental value.
"One of our friends and our supporters, Jenny Molan, and her husband, Jason Biggs, they had a dog named Gina who recently passed away and she was very special to them. So we named this little girl Gina, after their Gina," said Brooks.
The organization is working with the NYPD to make sure whoever is responsible is held accountable.
It's also a reminder to always be alert for any fur baby that needs attention.
"Just keep your eyes open. And if you see something or hear something, reach out to the authorities. You know, there's a lot of abuse and there's a lot of neglect, unfortunately," said Brooks.
Once Gina is all better, she will be eligible for adoption.
