Bus riders and drivers say East 161 Street is a bumpy ride - but relief may soon be on the way.
The road that passes by Yankee Stadium is riddled with potholes, particularly near River Avenue. The BX6, BX6 Select and BX13 bus routes all go through this busy corridor.
Some community members think that drivers should be compensated for damage done to their vehicles because of uneven roads.
“They patch the potholes; it comes back through. It's not that much space to drive,” one man named DeAngelo told our crews on his commute. “If somebody is rolling over a pothole, they should actually get compensated for it.”
The Department of Construction and Design (DDC) is currently managing a project for Department of Transportation (DOT) for this specific area to reconstruct the roads.
The project will also “add bus pads, will construct bus bulbs, curb and median extensions and will install pedestrian islands to enhance safety and access,” according to DDC officials.
The final design for this project is expected to be completed by the end of August with construction set to begin by spring or summer 2025, News 12 was told.
Thomas Alexander, district manager for Community Board 4, which covers East 161st Street, said the office is aware of the concerns and has been working with city agencies on this since at least fall 2023. DOT sources say the department repaired 25,500 potholes in the Bronx this year.
