A special Mass service was held in Prospect Heights Saturday night in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Divine Providence.
It’s meant to celebrate each year on Nov. 19 the patron saint of Puerto Rico.
The Mass lead by Rev. Robert Brennan was held at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph.
The church holds this special Mass every year on Nov. 19 just as churches do from around the world.
The Mass was done entirely in Spanish and Puerto Ricans throughout the Diocese of Brooklyn were invited to take part.
Each churchgoer even received a Puerto Rican flag.
St. Pope Paul VI declared Our Lady of Divine Providence, also known as Mother Mary, as the patron saint back on Nov. 19, 1969.
Dozens of Puerto Ricans filled the church as they gathered for the Mass service and to pay tribute to their culture.
Brennan said it's important to celebrate all the different cultures that make up the community as the Mass was also a recognition of Puerto Ricans for their contributions both in and out of the parish.
The feast also marks the start to the Puerto Rican Christmas season, the longest holiday season of any culture.
