Residents in one Brooklyn neighborhood are fighting back against plans to bring a Target store into their backyard.

The organization Protect Flatbush says it fears that the arrival of the retailer on Church Avenue will further enforce gentrification and force small businesses to close.

Ayana Colville, of Protect Flatbush, says the space could serve better for the area.

"I feel like a nonprofit organization that will supply kids with performing arts opportunities will be absolutely great for the community," Colville says. "Or even a community center."

No opening date for the store has been announced.

The group has started a petition that has more than 1,700 signatures.

A spokesperson for Target told News 12 in a statement that says in part: "We'll spend time learning how to best serve the community."
