Some elected leaders from both major parties are pushing to create a new children’s court in an effort to help out migrant kids.
Rep. Dan Goldman helped to create the bipartisan bill to protect migrant children while addressing immigration court backlog and speeding up processing time. Local lawmakers say that children often appear before a judge alone, and their cases take longer than those of adults.
Officials say they hope the bill will lessen the strain on immigration courts across the country and in New York City, as there are over 62,000 pending unaccompanied children’s cases in the United States.
