A group of Mott Haven residents and Hostos Community College students rallied Thursday to demand that the MTA restores elevator service at a busy subway station.
The stop at 149th Street and Grand Concourse has been without a working elevator for 30 years, according to the protesters.
The stop for the 2, 4 and 5 trains is near Hostos and the Lincoln Street Hospital, both of which service disabled people.
The nearest station with a functioning elevator on the same line is more than half a mile away on Third Avenue. Protesters say that is too far to walk for the disabled and the elderly.
Lawyer Ramon Jimenez says he has both cancer and asthma, and that he struggles when climbing the stairs.
The MTA says it intends to make the station fully accessible, but that first requires a feasibility study, approval and funding.
