Protesters in Mineola called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to leave Long Island.
This is the second consecutive day of protests outside of the Nassau County Legislature. On Saturday, protesters spoke out against President Donald Trump's administration. Now, they're demanding local leaders remove ICE agents from their communities.
People who came to the rally like Joseph Oquendo from Freeport say they're standing up for immigrants in Nassau and Suffolk.
"I defend the immigrants who come here to this country to work to help us out, to progress, to help their families," he said.
As News 12 has reported, ICE is actively investigating what the agency calls immigration crimes here on Long Island. Protesters say law enforcement is going after the wrong people.
"We want to make sure that this administration goes after those real criminals across the board," said Glenis Palacios, of Westbury.
The rally on Franklin Avenue was peaceful and police were on the scene to make sure everyone stayed safe.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman released a statement about the protest:
“Less than 100 people showed up to protest ICE while thousands have praised Nassau County for working with ICE to rid our county of dangerous criminals.”
