Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday that 250 smart compost bins will be added to neighborhoods across the city.  

These new compost bins will allow New Yorkers to separate their food and yard waste from other trash, with the initiative starting off in Queens on Oct. 3.  

Weekly pickups for yard, food and paper waste will begin for these compost bins once placed, and the three types of waste will be separated. 

Mayor Adams says this will make New York home of the largest composting program in the country. The bins will be made of a special organic plastic with a lid on top that will prevent rats from accessing the trash.  

Starting today, New Yorkers can order their own new bins from the city’s Department of Sanitation through Oct. 1.
