The Red Hook Community Center, known as a space to help unite the neighborhood for decades, welcomed the center’s newly renovated gym.
Community members broke in the new gym with some basketball following the city’s unveiling of its new look.
Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue says it was made possible with an anonymous $115,000 donation through the Adopt-A-Park Program.
“People can adopt benches, they can adopt basketball courts. It’s a way for us to be able to continue to enhance our spaces and to have the public be involved in that,” said Donoghue.
David Isaac, a Brooklyn native, says he’s excited for the renovations to the community center he’s been coming to his entire life.
“This is going to be great for the community,” said Isaac. “The old floor as you saw earlier is old and worn out but we in 2023 so it's exciting to see new floors, new rims."
Staff say the center has served as a safe haven for kids in the neighborhood to enjoy a number of activities while meeting new people and staying off the streets.
