Nassau County held a remembrance ceremony for the 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy Thursday night in Garden City.
Elected officials and community members gathered to honor local first responders who were out and working around the clock to help Long Islanders during the storm.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says he remembers Superstorm Sandy vividly, especially the aftermath
"I went in that Sunday, and I was there for 18 straight days - 17 to 18-hour days," Ryder says.
The Nassau County Police Department's Emerald Society Pipe Band and high school choirs also were at the remembrance ceremony.
Local officials discussed measures taken to help avoid destruction from future storms.
"We got to be prepared, we got to recognize every single day that we're only a moment away from something that could be a catastrophe," says Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
The event took place at the NCPD Center for Training and Intelligence.
Ryder says the facility is meant to be for preparedness training and a shelter in place area for county employees and their families during severe weather.
