There was a sigh of relief across the nation on Saturday as the government avoided a disastrous shutdown.
News 12's Valerie Ryan spoke with Rep. Ritchie Torres about the temporary funding bill -- and what we should expect once it expires in November.
To break it down, President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made an agreement earlier this year to suspend the nation’s debt limit through 2025, while limiting government funding. Torres says McCarthy broke his word and listened more to his far-right Republican Party.
Torres says the prevention of this government shutdown was a win because it’s effects would have been drastic.
President Biden signed the temporary funding bill to keep agencies open until Nov. 17, but Torres says we’re not in the clear just yet.
Ryan asked Torres what needs to be done to avoid this same shutdown next month:
“The inmates are running the asylum, and we have to fundamentally change the way the House operates. It needs to be governed much more effectively," he said.
