Sources say Javier Castillo Maradiago is no longer on Monday’s list of people to be deported.
Activists raised awareness Sunday regarding Maradiago’s possible deportation, and local officials helped out.
Rep. Ritchie Torres sent a letter to the acting director for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
He wrote that President Joe Biden issued a 100-day moratorium on certain removals and called for Maradiago to remain in the United States.
“The most important thing to us is our home, our family and our communities,” Torres says. “And threatening to deport someone is threatening to strip them away from their home, their families and their communities.”
Maradiago was reportedly being held in a Louisiana facility. Torres says his team has been in contact with Maradiago’s lawyer.
