An investigation months in the making has revealed that fraudulent practices by employment agencies targeting immigrants are becoming increasingly common.

The new report, obtained by News 12, reveals a common reality of immigrants being robbed by employment agencies who are making empty and broken promises.

The report gathered data which indicated a massive increase in complaints: from 328 in 2013 to 940 complaints filed in 2014.

Lawmakers say that the unlicensed employment agencies are able to fraud victims by constantly shifting locations, making it difficult to find them. Some are proposing new legislation to combat such practices.

A key provision of the new legislation is increasing fines up to $1,000 for the first offense and up to $5,000 for each subsequent offense.
