Dozens of residents rallied at in front of Councilwoman Diana Ayala’s office Monday to demand that she say “no” to a proposed jail in Mott Haven.
Ayala said she would be open to a jail at the NYPD tow yard on the corner of East 141st Street and Concord Avenue. The proposed site is part of the mayor's plan to close Rikers Island and place smaller jails around the city instead.
Mott Haven has been revitalized over the past few years, with the addition of affordable housing and a supermarket nearby the proposed site.
Residents say that they want to see that progress continue, and having a jail right in the middle of their community would set them back

Councilwoman Ayala's office says she's "committed to engaging with all stakeholders to ensure their voices are being heard" about this.
News 12 also reached out to the mayor's office for a statement and is waiting to hear back.
