Residents gathered in Washington Square Park Wednesday to celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility and to memorialize the lives lost in the community.
Washington Square Park has become a mainstage for celebrations, awareness and creating visibility for their community.
Many people danced, sang and chanted saying they are still standing after facing discrimination and prejudice.
A memorial was set up on a ledge in the park with candles remembering people in the transgender and nonbinary community who have lost their lives over the past year.
President Joe Biden issued a presidential proclamation celebrating the contributions of the community saying his administration is committed to the promise of America delivering equality for all.
The event was organized by Stonewall Protest.
