The dumping of Get Food NYC meals throughout the city is an issue News 12 reported on last month. Now, residents in Bushwick are reporting the same problem.
Get Food NYC launched in March, delivering emergency food from multiple vendors to homebound senior citizens and those at risk from contracting COVID-19.
Sonia Velasquez operates a food pantry. Each week since the start of the pandemic, she says she saw turnout numbers double and wondered why.
“I started seeing the boxes outside, I started seeing the cooked meals out in the street. I also started seeing boxes of food, not even touched..closed, in front of buildings,” said Velasquez.
News 12 reached out to the city’s Emergency Feeding Operation, which says, “New York City has been hit by an unprecedented crisis, and as a result, has stood up an incredible operation to distribute around one million meals per day to people in need.
Velasquez says she wants the waste to stop and has teamed up with her local district leader, Darma Diaz.
They are now working together with the intent to eliminate waste.
