Residents at the Linden Houses in East New York have been left without running water for over 24 hours.
According to the residents, they did not receive any warning.
Activists shared that water was shut off to a few of the buildings at the Linden Houses sometime between 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Since Sunday morning, their only way to get water into their homes is a makeshift sink that is connected to the fire hydrant on the corner.
Residents were coming by the hydrant with empty bottles in carts, wheeling them back and forth from their homes so that they could have at least a little bit of water for the next few hours.
Unfortunately, the water that is coming out of the hydrant is discolored and activists say that it is not fit for drinking.
Community activists told News 12 that many people are being forced to live in undignified conditions.
Some people came together Sunday morning and secured bottled water donations from local businesses to help ease the burden many are feeling.
Crews are now working at another hydrant and trying to work around the issue to help bring some water back into the building.
A NYCHA spokesperson told News 12 that the water disruption was caused by a water main break Saturday.
In a statement, the Housing Authority told News 12 in part:
"We understand that service interruptions are inconvenient and are working to restore service as quickly as possible. NYCHA crews are on-site, with plumbers and plumber helpers working to repair the break."
News 12 asked when residents can expect to have their water back, but have yet to receive a response.
