Bronx residents rallied Tuesday at the Harlem River Yards to demand a drop in trash and truck pollution.

They called on City Councilman Rafael Salamanca to sign a bill aimed to curb trash and truck emissions in the South Bronx -- which handles more than a third of the city's waste, according to advocates. They blame the resulting pollution for the area's high asthma rates.

The bill would reduce truck trips by 100 a day, which advocates argue would improve air quality.

But Salamanca says he doesn't support the bill because there's not enough evidence that it will substantially reduce truck traffic in the South Bronx.

"I am also seriously concerned about the jobs that could be lost if this bill passes," he says.
