Former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter was charged Wednesday in the death of 20-year-old Black motorist Daunte Wright.
Authorities say Potter has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for justice to be served.
“I would have liked to have seen more, but I’ve seen so many cases. But I’ve seen so many cases.. some standing right here that got nothing and I think the fact that she has been charged than what we get in New York sometimes. But it’s not what we feel is just, which is why we want federal laws,” said Rev. Sharpton.
Mothers who have also experienced the loss of their children during encounters with police joined Rev. Sharpton Wednesday.
Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner; Lesley McSpadden, mother of Mike Brown; and Sabrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin joined together to send a powerful message.
“I just want to say to the family we are deeply saddened by what you are going through... by what you have already experienced in the last few days, and what you're about to experience sitting through a trial.  An arrest is just step one... we all had arrests. And anybody can be arrested.. but we have to get a conviction,” said Fulton.
Wright’s family says they want to see a conviction but that first they will lay him to rest, as funeral arrangements are underway.
