Rite Aid has officially filed for bankruptcy after falling sales and a pile of opioid-related lawsuits.
Back in March, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a complaint against the company, alleging it knowingly filled thousands of illegal prescriptions. Pharmacists were also accused of ignoring red flags that indicate a prescription is illegal.
This comes as some shoppers tell News 12 that websites like Amazon provide better convenience for things that they would normally go to a drugstore for.
For now, Rite Aid only plans to close stores that are considered to be "underperforming." The company has not yet shared which stores these are. Ken Roy Cherrington Jr., a local shopper in Hunts Point, says he hopes his local store is not one of them.
"I hope they don't close this Rite Aid," said Cherrington Jr. "It's kind of expensive but they have good service, they have good products."
To date, Rite Aid employs over 6,100 pharmacists and has more than 2,100 stores across 17 states.
The company says it is making every effort to fulfill the payment of employees' wages, salaries and benefits without interruption. Rite Aid has acquired $3.45 billion dollars reserved for the restructuring of the company in hopes that not all stores will be impacted.
If you rely on it for picking up prescriptions, they say they will assist in the transfer of prescriptions to another Rite Aid location or nearby pharmacy.
