A neighborhood in Riverdale will likely become a national historic site.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that Fort Independence will be one of 27 properties that will be added to the state and national registers of historic places.
The recognition is one that many residents say they have wanted for more than six years.
The proclamation will help owners with tax breaks and may help prevent some redevelopment.
Neighbors say they hope the recognition will help conserve the beauty of the neighborhood and the vision its creator, Frederick Law Olmstead, had for it.
