Residents and staff at The Hebrew Home At Riverdale received their first dose of the Pfizer and BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.

Kelley Dixon, 78, was the first resident at the nursing home to receive the vaccine. He was vaccinated alongside Dr. Zachary Palace, the nursing home's medical director.

Palace says that nursing homes can finally do something proactive to break this horrible pandemic.

The Hebrew Home at Riverdale was selected to partner with Walgreens, whose pharmacists administered the vaccines.

A total of 200 residents are expected to receive the vaccine Monday followed by 400 more over the next two days.

News 12 is told nearly all of the residents at the senior care facility want the vaccine and have signed a consent form to be vaccinated even though they are not required to.

The facility started vaccinating residents with dementia first, as well as some of the staff.

News 12 is told The Hebrew Home at Riverdale had 54 residents died from suspects coronavirus cases.

There have been no active cases in the home since June.
