Now that school is back in session in New York City, what are students wearing?
Well, it depends on your school.
In New York City, there is currently no universal dress code for all schools, but each school can determine what students wear using guidelines from the Department of Education.
In July, the City Council passed a bill requiring the Department of Education to post dress code policies on its website and report on dress code policies in schools.
Councilmember Althea Stevens proposed a resolution that would make public school dress code policies more inclusive and reflect the wants of students and parents.
Community members News 12 spoke with gave mixed reviews.
Some saying they want uniform with expression, while others want to wear whatever they want. One parent says she believes uniforms are good for safety and bullying prevention.
Councilmember Stevens says although she hasn't seen any specific changes from dress code policies since the bill's passing, she says these are the kinds of conversations she wants to continue to have and be heard.
