City Council approved a measure to rename a Bronx street Hip-Hop Boulevard this week.
The building at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. is considered the birthplace of hip-hop.
It was the home of DJ Kool Herc, who pioneered hip-hop record spinning in the 1970s.
The push to rename Sedgwick has been a long time coming. DJ Grand Wizard Theodore, who later invented the technique of record scratching, says the move helps educate younger people about the history of hip-hop.
Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson says the renaming will also help raise the Bronx's profile.
The measure requires final approval by Mayor Bill de Blasio, but Gibson says she expects him to sign the legislation within the next few weeks.
