Dozens of people, including many Long Island high school students, are seriously hurt after their bus slammed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway.
The crash, which completely sheared off the roof of the vehicle, happened Sunday night eastbound at Exit 18 Eagle Avenue in Lakeview.
The bus was carrying 38 teenagers, along with five adult chaperones, on their way home from John F. Kennedy Airport following a school trip to Europe. The students were on their way to meet their parents at Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington when the bus crashed into an overpass at around 9 p.m.
Police say the driver and the 43 other passengers were all taken to the hospital. They say two suffered serious injuries and five have moderate injuries.
New York State Police are leading the investigation into what happened.
Police say the driver is being tested to make sure he was not impaired. So far, News 12 is told it seems the driver was unaware of the vehicle restrictions on the parkway because he is based out of state.
