Eight people were killed and several others were injured when a man opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis late Thursday.
Many family members didn’t know the fate of their loved ones until they were reunited at a hotel because of FedEx’s policy that restricts cellphone access within certain areas of their facilities.
Police said Friday afternoon that they do not believe the lack of cellphone access impacted response time but said that it impacted the ability for families to get in touch with each other.
FedEx sent a statement that says it has the cellphone restrictions in place to “minimize potential distractions around package sortation equipment and dock operations,” and adding that “cell phone access within certain areas of FedEx ground field operations is limited to authorized team members.”
The suspect has not been identified, and police say it’s unclear what his relationship is to the FedEx facility.
Police say there was no confrontation before he started shooting, which police say appeared to be at random in the parking lot and building.
The special agent in charge of the investigation says it will take a while to get all the details as they go through evidence both inside the facility and in the parking lot.
