A sinkhole in Tremont has left neighbors concerned for their safety.
Neighbors told News 12 that they reported a smaller hole one week prior to when the sinkhole expanded on Friday. At the time, it was the size of a foot.
Now, the massive sinkhole along E. 183rd Street and Bathgate Avenue caused traffic and concern for children in the community.
Steven Avenancio told News 12 that he’s lived in the neighborhood for 51 years and has never seen anything like this before. He says numerous calls were placed to 311, police and FDNY and nothing has been done.
Crews remained at the scene hours later. Officials said the sinkhole was a result of a water main break, which has been repaired, but street restoration was still in progress Tuesday night.
