More than a quarter of Bronx and city public school parents reportedly received letters informing them their children were in danger of failing.

According to the New York Post, the Department of Education sent the letters home last month to 27 percent of the families of students in kindergarten through 12th-grade. Some education advocates are now wondering whether Mayor Bloomberg?s promotion policy is doing any good. In the past, students in third-grade were required to pass a test to move up a grade level. If they failed, they either attended summer school or repeated the third-grade. Bloomberg extended the policy last year to include fifth and seventh-graders.

Critics of Bloomberg?s plan feel there shouldn?t be so many students at risk of failing. However, education officials say the numbers show that struggling students aren?t slipping through the cracks.
