Bronx residents were left baffled Tuesday after reports came out that the kidnapping of a 16-year-old in Melrose was staged.
Karol Sanchez and her family didn’t say a word as they left the 40th Precinct Tuesday after she was reportedly kidnapped the night before on Eagle Avenue.
The Dutchess County teen was questioned for hours by detectives about the kidnapping that lead to a statewide Amber Alert.
The teen was spotted Tuesday afternoon walking back to the scene on Eagle Avenue and East 156th Street where the apparent kidnapping took place.
Investigators are now looking at the timeline of events. Sources believe Sanchez was texting her boyfriend while walking with her mother to stage her kidnapping. Police sources say Sanchez's boyfriend has gang ties and a lengthy criminal history. He is currently wanted for grand larceny.
A police informant also tells News 12 the NYPD plans to subpoena Sanchez's social media accounts and phone records to find out what was said between her and her boyfriend.
Police tell News 12 that the case remains an active and undergoing investigation.
Sanchez has not been charged and no arrests have been made.
