In response to the recent suicides in the NYPD, a Tremont church is doing its part to let officers know their doors are always open.
A special prayer service was held Wednesday at Morning Star Full Gospel Assembly Church to bless the NYPD with protection for the new year.
Sister Monique Johnson says a Throgs Neck officer had the idea to dedicate a service to the police community, so she ran with it and opened it up to the entire borough of officers.
After the uptick in recent officer suicides, Johnson says the church is always here for them.
"They don't have to come to Mass, they can just come inside, sit in the sanctuary. They can pray, they can talk to someone," Johnson said. "It's not about religion, it's about God."
Johnson says she recognizes the sacrifices officers make every day on the job and that the church's job is to support them in their efforts of keeping the community safe.
