Nurses at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center held a vigil in Smithtown where they demanded more personal protective equipment.
The protest received plenty of support from people driving by Thursday night. They say they are still not getting support from the hospital, which is run by Catholic Health Services.
Those taking part in the protest say they continue to be forced to reuse N95 and surgical masks and gowns for several shifts while caring for multiple coronavirus patients.
Many nurses wouldn't share their identity in fear of being fired, while also being fearful of potentially risking their own lives every time they go to work.
"Every time I walk in their room I'm exposing myself and my family to COVID," says one nurse. "I'm dealing with people who are dying on ventilators. You know, that could be me in another month."
In a statement, CHS said in part, "The demand on PPE has been significant, and securing supplies has been challenging. As a result, we have followed the CDC and NYS DOH guidelines for extended use of masks and gowns when caring for patients with, or suspected to have, COVID-19."
