A remote option for students who
attend New York City public schools won't be happening anytime soon, Mayor Eric
Adams said in a call between city leaders and local lawmakers Wednesday
morning.
State Sen. Jabari Brisport says
that Adams told lawmakers that a remote option wouldn't be on the table for at
least six months.
Officials say COVID-19 testing was
another topic discussed on the call - and that it could change in the future.
As of right now, city students have to opt-in for testing.
City Comptroller Brad Lander
applauded the mayor being open to change the policy, saying, "We need to
scale up testing to keep students and teachers safe and learning."
Teachers say they're also in favor
of an immediate policy change.
News 12 reached out to the mayor's
office for comment. The call comes a day after students walked out of schools
just before noon to protest COVID-19 safety conditions.
