A series of jewelry store burglaries on Fordham Road has store owners and workers on high alert.
The NYPD Crime Scene Unit was on Fordham Road on Wednesday collecting evidence after a jewelry and phone store on East Fordham Road was hit by thieves at 4 a.m.
Police say two suspects entered the store through the basement and took around $10,000 in jewelry. Sources tell News 12 off-camera that the NYPD arrived right as the suspected thieves were running off and that those suspects dropped the merchandise.
This is just one of many robberies that have taken place in the area, including a gunpoint robbery that took place at Focus on March 5.
At around 2 p.m., another robbery occurred in the Fordham Road area – suspects tried to break into a jewelry store, according to police. Video obtained by News 12 shows one person trying to break through the store’s gate. The same store that was hit on Wednesday afternoon was also hit on Feb. 8. Police say that in that February incident, two suspects cut through the gate, broke the window at the store and took $70,000 of jewelry and $30,000 worth of clothes.
Police say the investigation into these two crimes is ongoing and that it remains unclear if they are connected.
