Subway

Some express trains will make local stops this weekend in preparation for the winter storm. Many planned service changes have been canceled.

Buses

Expect longer waits for local buses. Some buses will be pulled from service to apply snow chains before the storm and removing articulated buses from service during the storm.

Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR will run on a modified Sunday schedule, with the following changes:

No service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport.
Reduced Babylon Branch service with no direct trains to or from Grand Central.

The following planned service changes have been proactively canceled for this weekend and into next week:

Brooklyn weekend service suspension
Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Woodside westbound weekend bypassing
Montauk weekday overnight busing
Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village, Hollis midday westbound bypassing on Monday

Metro-North Railroad

Metro-North Railroad will operate hourly service on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines on Sunday. The New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches will run on their regular weekend schedules.

West of Hudson service on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will be temporarily suspended beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Visit NJTransit's website for updates.

Parts of Cross Bronx Expressway closed due to disabled vehicles stuck in snow

TRAFFIC UPDATE: NYC Emergency Management officials say that all northbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway are closed approaching 174th Street due to disabled vehicles.

The NYPD says the southbound Cross Bronx Expressway from Rosedale Avenue to East 177th Street is closed due to disabled vehicles stuck in the snow.

It says to expect delays and consider alternate routes.

NYC Public Schools students will be remote Monday

NYC Emergency Management officials announced that students scheduled to attend school on Monday will be remote.

Public school students in grades six through 12 already have the day off for Professional Development Day.

Elementary school students are preparing for a remote school day.

NYC Ferry announces service suspension

All NYC Ferry routes are suspended until further notice because of the winter storm.

Officials said the system is closing early because of heavy snowfall and low visibility.

5 weather-related deaths confirmed in New York City

Authorities confirm that five weather-related deaths occurred Saturday in New York City.

Police say two of the bodies were discovered in Brooklyn. Another was discovered in Queens and two others in Manhattan.

The deaths occurred amid plummeting temperatures, which prompted a citywide Code Blue alert yesterday.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani reacted to the news on X, saying in part, “it is a reminder that every year New Yorkers succumb to the cold. The danger of this weather cannot be overstated.”

Mamdani: NYC is ‘prepared for every possible amount of snow’

Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the city is fully prepared to tackle the major winter storm expected to bring snow and hazardous travel conditions on Sunday.

Mayor Mamdani said the city’s Sanitation Department is already brining highways and major streets and has 700 salt spreaders and 2,300 plow vehicles ready to be deployed as conditions worsen. He said all city agencies are on alert and coordinating their response.

“Make no mistakes, we are taking every precaution and we are prepared for every possible amount of snow,” the mayor said at briefing on Saturday morning.

Agencies including the FDNY, DSNY, NYCHA, the MTA and the Parks Department have added extra staff to handle potential emergencies. He said emergency vehicles will be able to respond to all 911 calls in a timely manner, regardless of snowfall.

City officials have also reviewed 311 data from previous storms to ensure plowing and salting efforts are evenly distributed across all neighborhoods.

By noon Sunday, the city is expected to announce whether public schools will operate in person or switch to remote learning. The mayor said teachers have prepared students for either option and the city’s online learning system has been stress-tested to handle a remote day if needed.

A Code Blue remains in effect, and officials say anyone in need of a warm place to stay should call 311.

A hazardous travel advisory will be in effect Sunday and Monday. Officials are urging New Yorkers to stay indoors if possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

"The full power of the city's enormous resources are prepared, poised and ready to be deployed,” the mayor said.

City Bike services will be suspended on Sunday starting at noon.
