Jacobi Medical Center is ensuring it's ready in case of another natural disaster by installing a new energy storage system.

The system, which consists of a battery that weighs 80,000 pounds, is the first of its kind in New York City. The battery comes from Washington State and when it's empty it weighs 25,000 pounds.

Steve Lochner, program manager, says the system will save on energy and money as well as put less demand on the power grid.
 
The battery that's part of the system is so strong that it can power up to 20 homes for four hours. It's expected to be fully operational by the new year.
