Elementary and middle school students sent their 12 new handmade sailboats out into the open water from the Brooklyn Marina on Tuesday.
Over 100 students took part in the event, all of them a part of the Brooklyn Boatworks program. The program focuses on teaching students the skills that they need to sail, focusing on science and math.
During the 2022-2023 school year, Brooklyn Boatworks teamed up with Title One public schools and NYCHA community centers to get students together to construct these boats.
Each group worked together weekly to turn their four sheets of plywood into functioning boats, going through design plans and learning how to use tools.
Tuesday’s boat launch was the end of a seven-month long journey for these students, who couldn’t be happier to take part in showing off their boating skills.
