A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that four chemicals in popular sunscreens absorb into the bloodstream at levels that surpass government-recommended levels after just one day of use.
Three of those chemicals remained in the bloodstream for a week.
The Food and Drug Administration notes that this doesn't necessarily mean these ingredients are unsafe, but should trigger more research.
However, experts say skin cancer is the No. 1 cancer in the United States, and the risks of not using sunscreen and the benefits of using sunscreen far outweigh the potential risks of the absorption.
Those who wish to avoid sunscreens that absorb into the bloodstream can use “barrier sunscreens” that don’t include those chemicals.
