7ds agoNew Yorkers across the city are ready to take on the summer and will be able to do so more freely, thanks to the return of Summer Streets.
Summer Streets is a program that helps people enjoy 20 miles of car-free streets over five Saturdays in July and August.
The program is expanding an extra two hours this year, helping people spend more time enjoying the outdoors without the interruption of vehicle traffic.
In Brooklyn, the program is primarily expected to run along Eastern Parkway from Grand Army Plaza to Buffalo Avenue, connecting Prospect Heights and Brownsville.
In the Bronx, the program is expected to run along the Grand Concourse from East Tremont Avenue all the way to Mosholu Parkway.
These streets and others across all five boroughs will be open for pedestrians and bikers from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Officials say this will be the largest Summer Streets to date and will be bolstered by the increased investment into the city's cooling centers.
"This is two extra hours of outdoor activities art, wellness, biking, and entertaining programming for all New Yorkers we at DOT are playing our part to have New Yorkers have the best summer ever," said Department of Transportation commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.
The program will last from July 27 to Aug. 24.
