Residents of the five boroughs found a respite near the water during the "City of Water Day" Saturday afternoon.
The event SUNY Maritime College took on a local flavor with "Boogie Down on the Sound."
The event aimed to educate residents about the resources available at their local waterfront.
"We're just trying to show people what there is available to them at their local waterfront here, and we just want to give them a taste of everything, so they understand the power of having that resilient and equitable access to the waterfront," an event organizer said.
The experience was a first for many. Organizers found that three-quarters of last year's participants had never been on a boat before. The event helped families gain confidence in their abilities to safely enjoy water-based activities.
Children who participated in kayaking and motorboat activities voiced their enjoyment and appreciation for the event. But the organizers' mission extends beyond a single day of activities.
SUNY Maritime College hosts various programs, including summer camps, with the goal of making the waterfront as accessible as possible for Bronx residents.
Organizers hope that the experiences and knowledge gained from these activities will have a lasting impact on the community.
