The Babylon school board accepted the resignation of the district's superintendent.

Linda Rozzi's resignation is taking a lot of members of the community by surprise, but the Babylon Union Free School District says that she sent a letter to the board in June to announce her retirement in August 2022.

The school made plans of her resignation public in January 2022.

That announcement comes around two months after dozens of former students spoke about sexual misconduct they claim to have suffered from their teachers at the school.

The allegations began when 2011 graduate Brittany Rohl spoke exclusively with News 12.

During Monday's meeting, some former students spoke out about their experiences at the schools with some saying homophobia was also a big problem during their time there.

Other criticized the board for having the meeting virtually while students still have to go to school in person or why they did not announce Rozzi's retirement until now.

The school board says "We made a decision at that moment based on the management of the district with two new assistant superintendents, a new principal at the elementary school, a new district clerk that we'd open the schools as safely as possible that September, and then make a transition to an announcement. So that's how we got to this point."

The board were asked for an update on the investigation into sexual misconduct, but they said they did not have one.

Several alleged victims say they still have not been contacted by the district's special investigator.

The board says they will discuss next steps at their Jan. 24 meeting.

Rozzi's retirement goes into effect Aug. 1.
