Some residents in the north section of the Bronx are speaking out in support of Councilman Andy King ahead of a vote that could decide his fate on Monday.
The City Council’s Committee on Standards and Ethics claims there's enough substantiated evidence involving allegations of discrimination, abuse of power and the misuse of government resources and funds to remove King from his council seat.
Council Speaker Corey Johnson supported the committee’s recommendation in a statement saying, "Council Member King should be expelled from office. This is not a decision to be made lightly, but Council Member King has given us no alternative. This is the third time this Committee has had to discipline the Council Member, and yet he continues to show a blatant disregard for the rules and policies put in place to protect staff and the integrity of this body."
King’s attorney, Joey Jackson, claims that the committee’s lengthy investigation into his client was not based on evidence or facts, but instead on character assassination.
“The fact is that this hearing was never a search for justice or the truth, it was always a character assassination for a councilman who stands up for his community,” said Jackson.
Jackson is calling on the City Council to look into the investigation and review the committee transcripts.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on Monday whether to remove Councilman Andy King from his council seat.
