A car smashed into a pharmacy in Sayreville overnight right before it was ransacked, police say.

Four individuals were involved, according to authorities. A white BMW X5 backed into the building at 3:40 a.m. Friday, causing significant damage to the pharmacy on Main Street. Glass shattered, bricks were smashed and a metal gate got pushed in.

Police say a black Dodge Charger was also at the scene. They say three people ran in and stole items from the store as a driver waited in the vehicle. It’s unknown what was stolen from the store.

Alarms alerted the owner of the Sayreville pharmacy, and police were notified by a resident.

Mayor Kennedy O'Brien says it makes him “furious.”

“This is my pharmacy. This is where I come. I did their ribbon-cutting in 2003. So, it’s very personal to me. And it also happened in the center of our town. I pray that it was not a Sayreville resident,” he said.

Police are looking through surveillance video as they continue to investigate the incident.
