About 130 swimmers participated in the 2025 Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim.
The 5.5-mile race starts at the Fire Island Lighthouse and ends at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. It is named in memory of Maggie Fischer, a 17-year-old from Brightwaters who signed up to compete in this event in 1999 but died in a car crash just days before the race.
Fischer's family has organized the swim for over 20 years to keep her memory alive. The event itself dates back to 1927.
Last year's annual swim was canceled due to fog. The event raises money for the Hospice Care Network Children and Family Bereavement Program and a St. Anthony’s High School scholarship.
