Ovarian cancer survivors and patients gathered Saturday in Prospect Park in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
The TEAL Organization, partnering with Women’s Health Expo, celebrated survivors and patients with activities in the park and a virtual walk following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It's been 16 years and I still get nervous," said Nancy Irizarry , ovarian cancer survivor. "I still get the worries that every time I'm gonna go for a scan that it's back again.
TEAL says there is currently no accurate screening for ovarian cancer and stressed the importance of being aware of your family's history with cancer.
"TEAL stands for Tell Every Amazing Lady and teal is also the official color of ovarian cancer awareness," added TEAL program manager, Courtney Donahue.
Ovarian cancer symptoms include bloating, increased urination or varying bowel movements and fatigue. Anyone with those symptoms is urged to see a doctor.
The TEAL Organization also said they're raising funds to help ovarian cancer survivors and push for more research and testing.
