Tenants at the Twins Park East senior housing development claim they haven’t had adequate heat this entire winter. 

Queen McFarlane, 78, says her sixth-floor apartment feels like a refrigerator. “I had soda and I didn't need to put them in a refrigerator because they were frozen just sitting in this living room,” said McFarlane. 

The NYCHA development houses seniors over 65. Seniors joined Councilman Fernando Cabrera to demand NYCHA turn up the heat. 

Cabrera is now taking action in a move that would allow NYCHA tenants to report their heating complaints directly to 311, instead of going through city housing. 

“This is why we are fighting in the council to pass legislation to have 311 able to receive the complaints,” said Cabrera. 

The city’s housing department released a statement on the heating issues saying, “Providing our residents with uninterrupted heating service continues to be our top priority. A roving team was dispatched yesterday evening and found sufficient heat and hot water service at this development. They will remain on-site to monitor service for residents."

Some tenants say they are spending $200 extra on their electronic bill just to heat their apartments.
