Venus Williams reopened refurbished tennis courts at St Mary’s Park in the Bronx.
The court on East 146th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue received renovations recently thanks to a partnership between Lacoste and the City Parks Foundation. Williams’ silhouette is also painted on the court.
Lacoste representatives say the court is part of their initiative to make tennis more accessible to the youth. Through their partnership with the City Parks Foundation, they plan to offer free programming and tennis lessons for the community.
"We're really hoping to build a program here and who knows maybe there will be a U.S. Open champion coming out of Saint Mary’s Park one day," said City Parks Foundation Director of Sports, Mike Silverman.
Representatives also told News 12 that they are on a mission to renovate tennis courts across the world in an effort to give children an environment to play, build sports skills and develop friendships.
